Hydration in the Florida Heat

Hydration in the Florida Heat

Dehydration sneaks up fast in the subtropical sun. These simple habits keep you safe all summer.

Florida summers are unforgiving. High heat and humidity accelerate fluid loss, and by the time you feel thirsty, you're already mildly dehydrated. For older adults and children, the risk is even higher.

Aim for steady intake throughout the day rather than gulping large amounts at once. Water is best; carry a refillable bottle everywhere. Add electrolytes if you're sweating heavily or working outdoors.

Watch for early warning signs: headache, dizziness, fatigue, dark urine, and muscle cramps. These are your body's early alarms — don't ignore them. Move to shade, cool down, and rehydrate immediately.

Plan outdoor activity for early morning or evening, wear light clothing, and never leave children or pets in a parked car. Common sense, consistently applied, prevents nearly every heat-related emergency.
